Catching up with Alex Smith

Tell us a bit about your career to date.

I studied 3D design at a college for two years which was really interesting. The course was really varied covering all types of design from furniture, to architecture to product design. It’s also where I studied CAD design which has been a big part of my career to date.

After college, I worked with my grandfather at his building contracting firm for three years which was a fantastic experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn all about the building industry from a master builder and I spent most of my time there working on an incredible barn conversion and it was a great accomplishment to complete it.

Around the time my grandfather was contemplating retirement, I met Garry, the managing director for The Cabling Group (and now The Audio Visual Group too) and after a few conversations, he offered me a role in the business. I moved into the pre-sales team and also did a bit of CAD design. After a few years there, I had the opportunity to move to MiX, a leading IT Infrastructure/AV consultancy as a CAD designer. I spent over three years there before leaving to travel around the world for six months.

After stints in Canada, America, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia it was time to come home. In the time I’d been away The Cabling Group had set up a sister company – The Audio Visual Group.  I met with Jamie Herrmann, the Executive Director, to discuss opportunities and started with the business the same day!

What is your role at The Audio Visual Group?

Even though The Audio Visual Group has a well-established sister company in The Cabling Group, it is essentially a new business and that means that it’s all hands to the pump. I am essentially involved in the pre-sales team but I am involved in all aspects of the business – from project managing to purchasing to invoicing and all things in between!

What are some of the challenges in your role?

The construction industry and in particular, the corporate fit out sector, is by nature fast paced. The challenge for us is to make sure that we balance delivering exceptional projects with continually updating our training and product knowledge. This is vital to ensuring we are always able to offer our clients the best solution for their project.

What do you think makes The Audio Visual Group just a bit different?

I think there is definitely a gap in the market for our offer. After speaking to leaders in the industry, we know there is a real need for a quality, professional Audio Visual solution on some of the smaller / medium projects coming up. Being able to offer an integrated solution with The Cabling Group is also proving to be very successful. We have seen this save a lot of time and cost over the last few projects we have delivered for clients who have taken up the offer.

What do you enjoy most about working with The Audio Visual Group?

I love the variety and constantly learning about new things. Audio Visual technology changes quickly and so there is always something new to learn. The directors always encourage people to get involved in areas they are interested in and are committed to providing training to allow people to progress in their careers.
